A Place In the Sun

When was the last time you took a vacation? I don't mean listening to the last thirty seconds of "Key Largo" at a red light or reading where Brad and Angie had dinner in People Magazine on the stairclimber. I'm talking about being several hours on a plane and landing in a tropical paradise where you can actually breathe. That's right... breathe.
We end up spending most of our lives struggling or addicted to our jobs. For some, work means financial security or an escape from a nightmarish home-life. For others, it's about survival and sometimes one job just isn't enough to lead a secure life. There never seems to be enough time or money to bring your life to a halt and listen to your mind and body which are in desperate need of sea, sex and sun. It's corny but the expression "Fun in the sun" really does take the stress away. You should try it.
Now once you've taken the steps and found the courage to scream " I NEED a break!!!!", then you need to jump on the first plane to Thailand. I don't need to explain why this is where all your problems will dissolve but I will say this: If you liked Peter Pan then this country is Neverland for adults.
Once you've landed in Thailand you'll realize how ridiculously expensive your hometown is. Fresh fruit is only fifty cents? An hour foot massage for five dollars? A hooker that'll stay with you all night for thirty bucks???? This is where dreams do come true.
Now before you get your panties in a twist because I mentioned hookers I'll have you know that it's not a taboo topic or illegal or looked down upon. For the women there it's sell soup on the street and live in a hole or work at a go-go bar to support yourself and your family who still lives in a rice field. Once you've opened your mind and adopted a more bohemian attitude about all this then you should know that once you go... you'll never want to come home. You'll handcuff yourself to a bench, if necessary.
You'll explore the infamous Walking Street in Pattaya by the beach where they still play great rock n roll music. From the bars to the live music you'll feel like you're in a Motley Crue video except nobody goes to jail and you'll still have plenty of cash to keep the smile on your face from fading. Let's see who takes a flight out now. Must I dare you to go?
Till next time...

  1. Hey Cheyenne. Does sound mighty tempting. So, did you write this from Thailand? Are you still there (handcuffed to a bench, or otherwise).

  2. Thanks for following me Scott. My father lives there and I've been numerous times. Maybe next time I will handcuff myself to a bench. It truly is a magical place and you almost feel enlightened there.

  4. Do you know what the Bell Curve is? It is a curve of statistical populations that looks like a bell. It is a mathematical certainty, no matter what you study or apply it to. So for instance, at the ends of the Bell Curve there is a small population of, say, serial killers. Farther in are simple sociopaths, your common criminals.
Further in from there, and the largest population are ordinary non-criminals. Much of life is about achieving balance - between work, play, spirituality, and all of the things that life consists of. We all find ourselves at different stations in life with different roles, responsibilities, and opportunities. But no matter what roles we have, what responsibilities or opportunities, pursuing and achieving some sense of balance helps us to stay in the middle of the bell curve and stay healthy, both physically and emotionally. Perhaps Thailand, or somewhere like it is good medicine for those who need their pendulum to swing in the other direction, even if for only two weeks. It might be refreshing - as long as you like the sun and sand! Otherwise go skiing!
